BALLS TO THE WALL

So, I've had a few questions and comments from some curious readers (hi Mom) about the title of my blog, and there are a few explanations I'd like to share.

Most importantly my father, who recently passed away, loooved his women. Specifically, he liked them a "little trashy" (direct quote), and when referring to the objects of his questionable affections would say, "that is one spicy meatball!"
Thanks Dad, for never being perfect, but always endearing and forever loved.

The other two explanations don't really matter I guess.

But MEATBALLS DO MATTER, and my vote for best in San Francisco goes to: A16
No surprise there since they feature their balls on Meatball Mondays (otherwise only available during lunch Wed.-Fri.).

Now, these balls aren't in any co-starring role like at Emmy's Spaghetti Shack, whose spaghetti and meatball dinner is just fine thank you. But at A16...the dreamy balls stand on their own—magnificently succulent orbs of beef, pork and lamb, with the usual suspects like eggs, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, and ricotta—which I think is the key to these irresistably light and moist balls. Thank you A16, for giving me this opportunity to say 'balls' five times now. Classy!

Other notable balls:
Bill Murray, wacky camp counselor at Camp White Pine in the cinematic classic Meatballs.

AND Damian's aunt Violet's swedish meatballs in grape sauce, which I just had for the first time a few weeks ago, but I understand have an important place in the Fagan Family Christmas history.

That's it for now. Meatballs are all the rage!

sadly, there aren't too many vegetarian balls options. have you heard of any recipies that don't call for meat? i realize that meaty balls are best, but what are some good ball alternatives? could you make balls with nuts? is that redundant?
