I know...I didn't know what a locavore was either, until I read this recent article in my Food & Wine mag. http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/how-to-eat-like-a-locavore
If you don't want to read the article (it's short, don't be lazy), a locavore is somebody who only eats and cooks with local ingredients (local usually meaning within 100 miles). There are varying degrees of locavorism (word nerd alert) from X Game extreme, to moderates like myself. I try and buy local produce, cheese and meat, but when it comes to Oreos and Costa Rican coffee beans, well, I guess I'm not fully committed. Maybe you find this whole idea annoying, and fear I'm turning into a hippy, but it's actually pretty easy for us spoiled foodies in the Bay Area to eat this way, and not have to shop at Safeway (horrors). Now if I lived in Detroit, we all know I'd be plumping up on the chili dogs and cheese fries, so I guess I'll just stay here for now.
But the next time I'm trying to explain the satisfaction of buying my dirty radishes straight from the farmer who grew them, and why I don't eat strawberries in February, don't roll your eyes...I'm part of a movement! http://www.locavores.com/ Yeah.
